“It is one thing to be a random Texas congressman Michael Burgess, saying that we should set laws for everybody in the whole country based on when he thinks fetuses masturbate. Male fetuses only. … But this guy also is in charge of something. The House Republicans took the fetal masturbation theorist and put him in charge of their subcommittee on health.”

Wisconsin State Representative Mandy White explaining in some very, very personal terms why she believes it is a terrible idea for the state legislature in Wisconsin to tell Wisconsin’s women that they will not believe you that it was rape if it does not end up in a police report.

And if it does not end up in a police report and you get pregnant then the decision about what happens next is up to the Republicans in the state legislature, it is not up to you.

That is what is happening in Wisconsin. Republicans saying essentially that women lie about being raped in order to get abortions they should not get and so we need to get the police involved in that decision or it didn’t happen.

And now Republicans in Washington are doing the same thing, for the whole country. The Trent Franks bill for a nationwide 20 week abortion ban is gonna get a full vote on the House floor tomorrow.

alifesetonshuffle:

I was watching last night’s episode of The Rachel Maddow Show this morning. Rachel featured a video from an organization called United We Dream and the next thing I know I’m crying into my cup of tea.

Immigration reform is constantly being debated by politicians that I think sometimes we forget exactly how it’s affecting real people.

In his capacity as governor of Iowa, Terry Branstad reserves for himself, personally, the right to decide whether or not you get an abortion. He says he will sign legislation just passed by the Iowa legislature that gives a personal role in deciding on a case-by-case basis whether he will allow Medicaid to cover your abortion, if that is your health insurance in the state of Iowa.

The provision in which Governor Terry decides what happens to you is part of an overall Republican crackdown on access to abortion in Iowa, but the specific decision on Medicaid covering abortion because you have been raped or because you were the victim of incest or because the pregnancy might kill you or the fetus is nonviable and will not live, those decisions — those decisions will not be made by you in Iowa. They will not be made by your doctor. They will not be made even by state law.

Those decisions, henceforth, once he signs this thing he says he wants to sign, those decisions will be made personally by him. Individually. He says he will sign that bill this week. He told reporters on Friday that he promises to be very thoughtful in making that decision on your abortion — as he handles those decisions one by one, personally.

This cannot be the thing that we are trying to do as a country, as a matter of immigration policy. The goal cannot be “let’s divide families.”

Whatever you think about the role of immigrants in this country as a nation of laws, what we have right now is a system where kids who have lived here their entire lives go from Nogales, Arizona to Nogales, Mexico to give their Moms a hug without a steel beam in the way, they get banished and they must go live in another country where they’ve never lived before. Where they might not even speak the language. That’s the deal now.

So companies are responding to this leak this week by saying, not us, we’re not doing it. Effectively, they`re saying, if it is happening, it is happening against our will. We would never given a chance to say no, would have said no.

And here is the problem with understanding how that could be so. Why is Twitter not on the list of companies? Why is Twitter not on the list of companies that the NSA says it’s got in this thing?

This is the slide that leaked right? This April 2013 slide, which shows supposedly all of the companies that the NSA says are in this program. You know, Yahoo and Google, Facebook and all the rest of them. Twitter is just as big a company as all those companies. Twitter handled just as much as private information, just as much potentially identifying information, including geolocating information as any of those companies.

NSA and FBI want all of those other companies but not Twitter data? Are they not interested with Twitter data? Or did they ask Twitter for access to their users data and Twitter said no? They would not let them have it, so they`re not the on the list but all of the other companies are?
